A start line briefing will precede the 8.00am start of both the multisport and duathlon.
Leg One (Run approx 8km)
Course: This leg starts in the DOC reserve at the end of Signal Station Road, also known as South Head of the Hokianga Harbour. The run is up a small rise back to SH12, turn left along the Omapere foreshore, through Opononi to Pakanae Church on SH12.
- Keep to footpaths wherever possible and keep left on the open road.
- The course will be marshaled and marked with arrows or signs.
- The timing pad will be located in the Pakanae Church for the cycle transition.
- Team entrants must transfer their transponder to the next member. No exceptions.
- Race numbers must be visible during the event.
Leg Two (Cycle approx 80km)
Course: Pakanae Church to Waipapa via SH12, Kaikohe, Ohaeawai, SH1 left at Old Bay Road, Te Ahu Ahu Road, left at SH10 to Waipapa transition at the Downer EDI yard (approx 80km).
- Only one support person may assist you in the transition.
- Cyclists must not mount their cycle in the transition.
- Roads are open to the public and NZ road rules must be obeyed.
- Participants must wear an approved NZ cycling helmet.
- Cycles to be placed on racks at the Pakanae transition prior to start times.
- The Kaikohe business area is declared a Neutral Zone (NO PASSING OTHER CYCLISTS) and a maximum speed of 30kph is recommended. Be aware of car doors opening and other town hazards.
- Keep to the left of the road cones approaching the Waipapa transition on SH10. Obey all traffic controllers and course marshals.
- A Hunter Cycles support van will patrol the course.
- Please don't litter Northland roads with used food packaging.
- Team entrants must transfer their transponder in the marked area immediately after the timing pad. No exceptions.

This is a no-drafting cycle leg. Cyclists who draft off another competitor or motor vehicle may incur a time penalty. The recognized draft zone behind a cycle is 7 metres from the front of the leading cycle (about 5 metres behind) and 35 metres from the front of a vehicle. The zone is 3 metres wide for cycles and 5 metres for vehicles.
IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO COMPLY WITH ROAD RULES
Leg Three (Cross-country run approx 8km)
From Waipapa transition via the Kerikeri River track to the Stone Store Basin. This will be the finish leg for Duathlon participants in both the Northern Crossing and the Missionary Trail.
Waipapa Transition:
- Parking is limited, please follow marshals' directions.
- Support crews please remove cycles from the transition area promptly.
- Leave the Downer EDI site by the left-hand lane of the driveway.
- Cross SH10 under the direction of the traffic management team.
- The running course will be marshaled and marked with signs and tape.
- A water booth will be available at Rainbow Falls.

Leg Four (Kayak the Kerikeri River & Inlet approx 14 kms)
Transition located on northern side of Stone Store Basin. Kayak start from grassed area on northern side, launch from sandbag platform and paddle the Kerikeri Inlet about 7km to a turning mark near the Kerikeri Cruising Club, Doves Bay, and return (approx 14km). Short run to finish on the grassed area at the Stone Store Basin.

Kayak Requirements:
- On entering the water there is a green marker positioned towards the centre of the river approx 80 mtrs away. On the outward leg this marker must be taken to port, keeping it on your left side. On the return leg keep this marker to starboard, keeping it to your right.
- The outer distance mark at the Kerikeri Cruising Club will be passed to port (anti-clockwise). A safety boat and marshal will be standing by the bouy.
- No kayaks shall begin this leg later than 13.30pm.
- All kayakers must wear an approved NZ standards life jacket.
- All kayaks must be four metres or more in length, surf skis and single waka ama are permitted.
- All kayaks must have proper floatation bags (minimum of two) or watertight compartments.
- All kayaks must have their race numbers positioned on the starboard (right) side of the foredeck so they can be seen from the marshals’ boats.
- Make sure you have practiced and are confident at self-rescue.
Our kayak marshal may assess your equipment.
We strongly recommend:
- Using spray skirts and carrying a paddle float.
- Carrying a bailer, pea-less whistle and day flare.
- Tethering paddles to craft.
Other important Information:
- For assistance, hold your paddle up vertically if in the boat; hold an arm up vertically if in the water.
- After beaching your kayak, marshals will remove your kayak to the grassed area for later collection by your support team.
- Only one support person is allowed to assist you in the transition.

A start line briefing will precede the 10.00am start of both the multisport and duathlon.

Leg One (Mountain bike 13km)
- Rail Trail Cycleway - Old Railway Platform, Lake Road, Okaihau to SH12 Kaikohe.
- The trail includes a dark curved rail tunnel. Remove sunglasses and use cycle lights if fitted. LED lights will be fitted in middle of tunnel.

- Kayak - see Northern Crossing Multisport instructions above. The turning mark will be near Skudders Beach at approx 3 km. Round this mark to port (anti-clockwise). A safety boat and marshal will be stationed near this mark.
- No kayaks shall begin this leg later than 14.00pm.
Please read all kayak requirements above for the Northern Crossing.
GENERAL (for all events)
Race Numbers must be visible during the event.
If teams fail to transfer transponders between members their overall time
and place will not be calculated.
If a team member fails to complete a leg then that team must withdraw from
the event.
All individual competitors and teams will receive a transponder at registration
which must be handed back to officials on completion of the course or withdrawal.
A fee of $40 will be charged for any transponder not returned.
Stone Store Basin Finish Area

At the finish return your transponder to marshals within the restricted area.
Car parking is available on both sides of the Kerikeri River but is limited.
Food and drink are available at the Stone Store Shop, Pear Tree Restaurant, Honey Pot Cafe and Kerikeri Scouts stall. Finishers will be provided drinks by Kerikeri New World in the finish area.
Please obey Marshals
Disobeying a Marshal may result in a time penalty or disqualification.
Other information
Competitors' supporters must wear the stick-on badges from race-packs. One supporter may assist you in a transition area.
Team entrants; make sure you transfer your transponder to the next team member.
Competitors who withdraw from the event must phone or text the Race Controller - Ian Faulkner - 0274 769200 ASAP and certainly before 3pm.
Please take care and don't speed.
Prize-giving
Prize-giving will be held at the Pear Tree Restaurant at 15.30pm. Trophies and a range of exciting spot prizes will be awarded. Competitors must be in attendance and produce their race numbers to receive spot prizes.
Prize-giving should take less than an hour. Kerikeri maps will be available at the finish area for those who need them.
